Pickin' Purses

Isn't this cute?
My daughter got this purse from my mother-in-law several years ago

She absolutely loved carrying it all around and put all of her treasures in it. I've got to admit....I kind of liked it & thought of carrying it myself at times...

however, she took care of any notions of that! She wrote her name (in permanent ink, mind you!) right on the inside.

Of course, I cringed, because, you see, it is an Enid Collin's purse. Which, at the time, Country Home declared a "highly collectible" thing that month!

Oh well, it was her purse...right?

So, I visited Ebay and saw what was available for mommy's to carry, and found all sorts of lovely purses - but they always went over my budget! I had forgotten all about these delicious vintage purses until yesterday...

Karrie and I were shopping at the Maumee Antique Mall, and I spotted this... a vintage Enid Collins "Pavan" purse...mmmmm!

Dare I ask what the price is? YES - of course - always ask the price! Anyway, the price was right...and even better Karrie ended up getting it for my birthday & I am sooo excited!

Enid Collins has such an interesting history - I just love it because she was an entrepreneur and created beloved purses for women in the 1940's-1970's.

She was a Texas rancher's wife, and wanted to make some extra money to help her family make ends meet. She started making her leather and canvas bags and sold them sold in the gift shops of nearby dude ranches. Enid became a household name when Neiman Marcus placed their first order.

I just love to hear stories like this - don't you? You'll notice that Enid Collin's purses are quite fun and whimsical and easy to spot - great pieces of art to set around, as well as carry on your arm!

How fun! I love both you and your daughters purses. I wonder if she will ever come to regret having written her name on that purse?!

I never heard of Enid Collins until now and you have my ears perked up!! They are so cute and I love only certain vintage things when it comes to personal items, purses being one of them.

Did you know that Ralph Lauren did almost the same thing as Enid. He sewed up a bunch of ties, walked into Neiman Marcus and they said "Okay, whoever you are, lets see if they sell." La De Da!!

Great post and Happy Birthday!
