Can You Can?
This weekend was a canning frenzy! We had so many peppers that a friend gave us that we just had to come up with something for them.....so off to the farm market for some plump Roma tomatoes for salsa.
Then we went to the grocery store and loaded up on some wonderful cilantro - oh how we love cilantro!
Then there were all of the peppers! We made the most delicious salsa - here's one of the recipes we made (just in case you have a lot of peppers to unload!!)
JALAPENO SALSA
3 cups chopped, peeled, cored tomatoes (we used Roma tomatoes because they are meatier!)
3 cups chopped jalapeno peppers
1 cup chopped onion
6 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons minced cilantro
2 teaspoons oregano
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1 cup cider vinegar
Combine all ingredients in a large sauce pot. Bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes. Ladle hot salsa into hot jars, leaving 1/4-inch head space. Adjust two-piece caps. Process 15 minutes in a boiling-water canner.
Yield: about 3 pints
Note: when cutting or seeding hot peppers, wear rubber gloves to prevent hands from being burned.

Shadow Shot Sunday
As I was walking upstairs tonight I looked out of the window and saw a fabulous shadow from the tree outside being lit by the security light. Thought I'd share the green of the leaves before they are gone!Enjoy more fun shadow shots at Hey Harriet's - and have a great Sunday!

What's Hot in Home Decor
Hot product.....! Received our weekly email telling us what this month's hot new products are. Lately, we've been really disappointed in this email that comes - we haven't found anything that has excited us as much as the french chest back in April. Well, this caught our eye - we've seen a lot of crystal chandeliers with sheer barrel shades around them. We thought this was a great take on it! Check out more of the fun things from Marisa Holzer Studios in New York City.
Now...if you don't have the $5000 to spend on this chandelier, but you do like the look of these chandeliers - you can always update your outdated chandelier with one of these trendy chandelier covers by making your own. Check out this article from Better Homes and Gardens that will direct you towards this fun look - without breaking the bank!!

Wednesday Words
When we recall the past, we usually find that it is the simplest things - not the great occasions - that in retrospect give off the greatest glow of happiness. ~Bob HopeHave a favorite quote? Put in on your wall! Visit our Wall Enhancers page to get your own words!

Open House Weekend and A Sunday Shadow Shot
What a great weekend - not only was the weather perfect for Open House, we had a fun, relaxing time visiting with customers and sharing decorating ideas with them! We are happy that the store looks all decorated "oh-so fall!" (now we just need to get going on our own homes!!)
Thursday night we have such a great time with Catherine Reiter of Healthy Bakes by Catherine. Not only did Catherine bring her signature "happy" brownies (which are out of this world), but she brought her breakfast cookies and granola that we sold all weekend long at the store! Catherine once again amazed us with four pesto recipes that were so delicious - we couldn't stop dipping our zucchinis and crackers in them! The bean dip was soooooo good! We will share it next week with you (forgot to bring the recipe home to type it in....sorry!!)And now for our SUNDAY SHADOW SHOT.....

We loved this shot of the field of soybeans behind the store. It's the perfect "Fall" shot!!
As always - visit Hey Harriet to see what other fun and unusual shadow shots are being submitted this week!!

Do Tell...
We were tagged today by Violet Posy and she wants us to come up with 7 obscure (or what we like to call quirky!) things about The Summer Kitchen Girls - are you really ready? Here we go!1. If we don't tell people we are sisters, they usually guess it after witnessing our hands flailing and our answering questions in unison.
2. We easily manage to drink 10 - 15 ounces of tea every day at the store (we manage to visit the "loo" a lot during the day too!)
3. Karla owns the ENTIRE collection of Doris Day movies.
4. If, in conversation, you say anything close to a song lyric from the 40's, 50's or 60's....we may break out singing the rest of it - an example, a customer came in and in conversation said "What a difference a day makes" and it took all of our self control not to finish it with "....twenty-four little hours!"
5. Karrie had her childhood diseases during her high school years: Chicken pox in the 10th grade and tonsils out in the 12th grade.
6. We loved, I mean loved McDonald's French Vanilla Cappuccinos, and now are devastated that they are replacing them with McCafe's.....we'll stick to the tea thank you!!
7. The final quirky thing about us (and a LOT of people find this very weird around here...) is that we buy each other "good" gifts for birthdays, Christmas and the like from......you guessed it....JUNK STORES!!! (I know....the horror!!) Take us to a junk store any day over the mall!
Well....now it is your turn....let's see what these delightful bloggers find quirky about themselves.....

40 Changes Everything!
Sorry everyone! When you turn forty, you obviously can't work Mr. Linky! First we sent people over to Tales of The Summer Kitchen for Kari & Kijsa's Designing for Life post. When we discovered our mistake, I tried to put us on again - however......I was trying to be funny, but forgot the URL address - so forgive my ailing mind! However, if you play the lottery, you might want to try these lucky numbers 7, 21, and 22 (of course - they might be unlucky too!!)
Hope you got a good laugh on us!!
Hope you got a good laugh on us!!
Designing for Life
One of our favorite rooms in Karla's house is the living room. It is one of her favorites because - it is so close to being done - the only thing she needs in it is something for on one wall....but that wall doesn't bother her - She knows that we'll find the perfect thing some day. One of our top design philosophies is to never - I repeat NEVER purchase anything that you don't love!
There are not one, not two, but four beautiful stained glass windows in her home. They are all the "inspiration pieces" that we pulled the color from for each room. The living room's stained glass has just a small round, pomegranate colored glass in it - so this is what we chose for the wall color. It took about a year to come up with the wallpaper - but having patience pays off - no need to want to tear it down in four of five years - this is on for a good 20+ years!!
Both of us consider ourselves traditional/eclectic girls. We love English and French Country most - and love adding a hint of the outdoors inside our homes. However...we LOVE the cool, calm white look of a cottage look (we've decided that it doesn't "fit" our homes....so we will do that when we get a cottage along the lake together - no we haven't informed the Mr.'s yet!!)
Stop on over to Kari & Kijsa's blog to see all of the neat designing for life posts by everyone!

It's Karla's Birthday!

Well, not only has it been Airstream week here at The Summer Kitchen, but also the week of "40". That's right, 40 for the number of years our family has had an Airstream refinishing business, and 40 is the number Karla turns on Monday!
This has also felt like the week of parties. We have had dinners and entertainment for our rally attendees every night since Thursday, and today we managed to pull off a surprise birthday party for Karla. Everything went great, and we even made it home before the rain started. Although, Karla didn't like the fact that she missed a flea market today! Oh well, time with the family & friends was worth it.
So, My blogging friends, join me in one more surprise wish to my sister! HAPPY 40th BIRTHDAY KARLA!!!
Day Is Done
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.
Fading light, dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.
From afar, drawing nigh, falls the night.
Thanks and praise, for our days,
'Neath the sun, 'neath the stars, neath the sky;
As we go, this we know, God is nigh.
Sun has set, shadows come,
Time has fled, Scouts must go to their beds
Always true to the promise that they made.
While the light fades from sight,
And the stars gleaming rays softly send,
To thy hands we our souls, Lord, commend.

What a weekend! We survived - yippee!
The Saturday tour of trailers didn't happen because it was raining, so yesterday Karrie and I took some pictures of Mom's trailer for you.

Host A Rally, and They Will Come
If we had to name one thing that we loved about having this business, it would be meeting all of the people. As kids - we constantly had people from all over coming, and usually staying while they were waiting for their trailer to be done. We would get invited in for a cookie - or like in this (most embarrassing) picture, get invited with your brother and Donnie & Marie barbie for a tea party!
There was once a big map of the Untied States up in the shop and every time a customer would come - we got to help find their hometown and put a pushpin in it. You can imagine how much fun it was to see the collection of pins all across the United States! If you have ever been to Henry Ford Museum up in Dearborn, Michigan, you may have seen the Airstream display. That trailer was refinished by Dad years ago.

"Classic roadside sights on display include the famed "silver bullet" Airstream trailer parked next to a row of Burma Shave signs to help sell America's favorite shaving cream: ("Within this vale / Of toil and sin / Your head grows bald / But not your chin / Burma Shave")." (Photo by John Clor)
Until tomorrow!
Good night!

Quick Change Artist
1. Find a wallpaper you like
2. Cut the wallpaper to fit the back of your hutch or cupboard. Get creative and put wallpaper in your door panels, alcove, or glass pane if you'd like - there are so many possibilities!
3. Adhere the wallpaper with water (if it is pre-pasted), staples, or double sided sticky tape.
4. When you are tired of it and want an new look - take it off and start again!!
Now, get out there and put some pattern on something!

A Day At Quailcrest Farms
We took many pictures of the sights, the vendors and the ideas - so sit back and enjoy!!
I couldn't resist this brick pathway.....it was so perfect!
These pillows were just darling - I loved how they used the hankies on them!
This gentleman was making tops for the kids. Wouldn't you know that we had to get the one that we saw him make!
Usually I'm not one to get into the chairs with a pot of flowers in them....but when the flowers look like this - well, I might rethink it!!
Musicians were playing all day - it was so relaxing and fun! What was great is that there were plenty of nice, shady spots like this to hang out in while listening to the music and having a cool drink!
